30 Jun 2009 Some of the strange things

Well you always something new in the morning on the drive to work, sometimes its subtle other times its not. Today we have a half half drive, so far I have seen:

  • at least 10 men peeing on the roadside, why do men and women here just pull and and pee, it doesnt matter where they are too.
  • one man vomiting copious quantities of liquid on the roadside, mind you he was facing the traffic so I couldn’t miss this performance.
  • a cow sitting in the middle of the road
  • a cow sleeping lieing on its side in the middle of the road, it looks like its dead but its sleeping, I have never seen cows sleep like this before

The car I am been driven to the office in is a piece of shit, its a older unloved very dirty tata indigo, a little car. In reality its probably no older than 2 years, but they have no cleaning chemicals here nor vacuums, so imagine the smell of the worst cab you have ever been in and you can put yourself in my seat. This one I feel dirty sitting in and I am sticking to the seat which is not a good sign! My normal tata indigo, although badly dented on the outside at least is clean inside, but its gone in for a new gear box. They thought that this was a good idea as 1st gear and 3rd gear didnt work anymore!! plus it had this horrible metal on metal noise coming out of the front of the car at any speed over 20 kmh.

So today will make another day of not doing much, I am totally amazed at how nothing ever gets done here. In our office there must be 100 people in there and mostly they don’t do much. the internet in the office is horrendously slow, its a dsl 512kbps connection between these 100 or more people, so you can imagine how useless it is. Because these people are using the internet they get even more unproductive as they wait for pages to load. Its so slow that cnn.com just doesn’t load at all, plus add to it a firewall protecting us from the evils of hundreds of website its just a waste of time using the office internet connection, so most of us use our wireless internet cards. They are cheap, although limited to 10gb of downloads at just $12 per month for the connection.

Oh…now the radio in the car has started working out of one speaker, but its not turned on….  its just started this all by itself… its so distorted too as the speaker is blown out, you can hear the paper in the speaker rattling. The driver, Mukesh, just fixed it by actually removing the radio unit as a whole out of the dashboard, so the radio is now sitting on the seat. But at least its quiet.

The traffic is moving again as we come into the last couple of miles into the city, and the road is going to get really bumpy here, which is strange as its one of the newest sections of road…obviously no one put in the contract for the road builders that they must use a level when making the road.

Take a look at this, its the mall cops at City Center Mall here in the suburb of Salt Lake City being inspected, just after I took this the supervisor actually slapped one guard for something to do with his tie!

Mall cops getting the once over from the boss at City Center mall, he really berated them, even slapped one for his tie being wrong.

28 Jun 2009 We are now know at the supermarket

Yes we have only been there 3 times, but at Spencers at Mani Square Mall which is the closest thing we have to a real supermarket we are known to the staff already.

On saturday when we went there we were just wandering around getting the last minute things, and this guy who does the bagging (his shirt label says housekeeping) kept pestering us and trying to make us check out, although we werent yet finished getting things….but why….

What is weird here in the supermarket is there are rarely prices on the shelves, normally the only time a price is shown is when its a special offer, or deal. So to find the price you must search the actual item for a tiny label which will mention the price…very frustrating it is. Whats also weird is as you walk around staff come up and put things in your cart… but why, some just put them in, others say why. Its actually just free items we find out, like you buy 4 bottles of soda and you get a chocolate bar free, but its strange at first especially as the first 2 times it happened the staff just dumped them in our shopping cart and walked away… we just looked at each other with strange ‘huh’ looks and kept on shopping.

Meat is different here, we thought India would be a lot more liberal than it is. In Malaysia we had nice huge supermarkets there and they sold everything in them, although the pork products were kept behind a glass walled area that looked like it was a porn shop, and it had a separate air supply so as to not contaminate the other people in the store. But India isn’t like this, in the supermarket we have just fish and chicken, with some mutton (aka goat) and some pork sausages and bacon and ham. The chicken isn’t what we are used to either. They have whole chickens, with skin or without, drumstick packs, boneless chicken and curry chicken which includes bones and attached gizzards. The boneless chicken is all different meats, for instance in one pack we got half a breast, the ass flap, and a lot of thigh meat… hummm . I know that most people here don’t eat meat, and when they do they walk down to their local market and the man kills the chicken, plucks and guts it for you so you get to take home a freshly killed, still warm chicken! But for us this isn’t the way although its probably the best meat, and plus we don’t have a market near us anyway.

Although I don’t want to know the mercury content of the seafood, it is suprisingly cheap and good. Just this weekend we bought 1kg of huge tiger prawns for Rs300 or $6 ! They even clean them, devein them and take off the heads and shell while you wait.

So back to the checkout stage….when we were ready to leave we were lining up at a empty register, only to be told we must go to number 2….but why is it our skin color? We oblige and go to number 2 even though it has a line of people waiting at it, then it dawns on us, well it dawned on Cindy first, I was a little slow on the update, it was the same guy we had had as our cashier the last 2 times, and now he has adopted us it seems.

Checkout is an affair, I suppose its because we are spending the average monthly wage on food to support our eating habits…maybe not…but what happens is you are nicely pushed aside and offered a chair (it can take about 20 minutes to checkout, its no fast affair here), one guy takes your cart and starts emptying it, the cashier goes to work and the bagger sorts and bags, sometimes you get a sorter too so that everything is sorted perfectly. If all goes well the computer wont crash too, but 80% of the time, when he hits total it crashed and the whole transaction must be recovered, this isnt just in the store, it seems to happen a lot in the stores here.

From our balcony we get to see everything , I love these trucks, now who would think of putting a load of gravel or sand in a truck that has no feature to dump the load! It is loaded and unloaded by hand!!! You can see the loader boys riding on top and in the cab.

26 Jun 2009 A new shanty is born

Its amazing what you see from 7 stories up, this is a shanty being built over the last 5 days.

Day 1, the foundation is laid and the structure is in place… the hard working couple who are the proud owners of this house are actually living here already!

house-day-2

Day 2 , the rafters are being installed, but why normally there is just a tarp on the roof…

house-day-1

Day 3, the roof is on, and its tiles! Amazing that a flimsy structure can support the weight of roof tiles! These people arent your ordinary shanty people if they can afford tiles, normally its a large plastic billboard that makes the roof waterproof on a shanty house.

house-day-2_0

Day 4, look at this place, the walls are installed, whats next central airconditioning?

house-day-3

Day 5, What could a family ask for, this is it, water view , 4 walls and no plumbing1

house-in-progress-5

Day 6, Its complete, all we need is a toilet and plumbing and electricity and its done…oh heck we dont need that shit, lets just live here and take a dump out the back door.

25 Jun 2009 Why is it so hard to buy a beer for christ sake…

Yes its hard to buy beer here, stupidly hard, tonight I got the driver to stop for beer. This time we thought we would do it at russell street in the city as its full of liqour stores, or as they are called here “wine shops” …I havent figures this out as they rarely sell wine people!

But needless to say US$36 dollars later I am the proud owner of 24 tiger beer cans… ahhh…. pity it was in a store that had no refridgeration and the beer was 40 C ! 2 hrs its been in the freezer and its still warm.

Anyway this last week we moved into the apartment, its still temporary as its smal, its about 850ft , just 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms a small galley kitchen and a living/dining room with a small balcony… and small it is. So tomorrow we are hoping to get to look at one of the garden apartments that are available, yes there are apartments that have their own private gardens, who would have thought that 12 storeys up you could have a lawn!

We are currently on the front of the building, and damn its noisy. 24/7 its horns blowing and cars and trucks. Way too much, add to this the fact the sun rises here at 4.30am and we are on the eastern corner its not nice at all!

But we get to see lots of things, I tell everyone at work we are now living in the cow fields of Kolkata, because literally this complex is in the old farmlands and there are cows and farms around us.

Across the road we have this veggie farm that they are working on at the moment:

women-inf-field

The rock pickers on their way to work

hard at work removing the rocks

the one in red doesn’t work hard and keeps walking away

surprisingly they have a real motorized  rotary hoe to plow the fields

the farmers kids are easily amused by playing in a dead tree which is not seen normally…that is kids actually playing!
